Getting Files

In the main window, enter the server name or address, and, if needed, its port number, a username, and a password.  Click  Go  to check the server status and show the contents of the remote folder.  Browse the server's folders to find the folder containing the file you wish to download.  Select the file you wish to download in the Remote browser on the right side of the main window.  You may select multiple files and folders. 

If a file with the same name as a file you are getting already exists in the Local Path, you may be asked to confirm whether you wish to overwrite it.

To begin a download, click the "◀ Get" button or double click on a selected file in the Remote Browser.  The file will be written into the folder displayed or selected in the Local Browser.  You must have read permission for the remote file and write permission for the local destination.

The file will be saved with a name ending in ".TMP" during the download.  On Windows systems, a ".CHK" companion file will also be created.  If the download is interrupted, do not rename these files as doing so may prevent the download from being resumed.  The correct filename will be assigned when the download completes successfully.

When you begin a Get operation, the local folder will be searched for files or partial downloads with the same name.  If a useable partial download is found, you may choose to Resume it or delete the existing file immediately.  If a conflicting file that can't be resumed is found, you will be asked if you want to delete the old file.

While the download is proceeding, you may continue to browse other folders and servers, and you may request additional file transfers.  Additional transfers will be queued and will occur in the order they are selected.  See the Multitasking section for details.

Once a file has been successfully downloaded, ExpeDat Desktop will attempt to set the modification date, access rights, ownership, and group id of the downloaded file to match those of the remote file.  Whether or not this is successful will depend on the server version, operating systems, and ExpeDat Desktop's own access rights.


Clicking the Bookmark button will create an expedat:// URL pointing to your current location and any one file you have selected.  You can then send that link to another ExpeDat Desktop user so that they can find the same location or download that file.

An expedat:// URL is activated by clicking it in a web browser or by pasting it into the Server field.  If a username is being used when the URL is created, the URL will be set to prompt for credentials when it activated. 

When browsing non-Windows servers, symbolic links will be marked in the remote browser with a small arrow in the lower left corner of the icon.  You may Get a file targeted by a symbolic link by double clicking on the link or selecting the link an clicking Get, just like a regular file.

When Getting folders, the handling of symbolic links depends on whether Streaming Folders is enabled.  See Copying Folders for details.

If you select a file that is a symbolic link to a regular file and click "Get", the target file itself will be downloaded.

Windows symbolic links are copied as if the target file were in the place of the link.  Windows shortcut files (.lnk) are copied as regular files and their targets are ignored.

Irregular Files

Other irregular files (devices, sockets, pipes, etc.) cannot be downloaded or targeted as the destination of a Get.  If an irregular file already exists at the destination path, then the download will fail.  See the Known Issues section for further details.
