ExpeDat 1.9-4 Compatibility

ExpeDat release 1.9-4 includes new client features which are not compatible with releases 1.9-1 and earlier.

Affected customers have the choice of receiving 1.9-4 in compatibility mode, in which the clients won't use the incompatible features, allowing them to work with older servers.  This lets you update your clients to take advantage of bug fixes and some new features, without having to upgrade all your servers right away.  The affected client features can be enabled later, once all your servers have been updated.

This note includes details about what actions customers should take, which versions are affected, and what features are affected.

Actions to Take

Check the version numbers of your servers.  MTPexpedat will display the server version whenever you list a directory on that server.  You can also check the server logs.  More information about identifying software versions can be found in Tech Note 0001.

If you are running servedat 1.10.0 or earlier and are not ready to update your servers, then contact DEI Technical Support to receive 1.9-4 clients in compatibility mode.  Once you have updated all your servers, contact DEI Technical Support for instructions on receiving the new features.

If you are already running serverdat version 1.10.1 or later, then contact DEI Technical Support to receive 1.9-4 with full features enabled.

Affected Versions

ExpeDat 1.9-1 containing servedat 1.10.0, and earlier.

are not compatible with the new features in

ExpeDat 1.9-4 containing movedat 1.9.2 and MTPexpedat 1.9.2, and later.

If you try to use the newer clients with the new features enabled to access servedat 1.10.0 or earlier, you will receive the following error:

Failed: Remote Application: Unsupported Feature

You can see which packages contain which server versions, and what new features and bug fixes are available with each release, by checking the ExpeDat Change Log.

Older clients can be used with the newest servers.  It is not necessary to update older clients, though it is generally recommended.

Affected Feature: File Meta Data

Older clients would only transfer the contents of the file and file name.  Date stamps, permissions, and ownership were determined by operating system defaults.

Newer clients and servers can preserve a file's modification date, permissions, ownership, and group id.  This feature varies depending on the operating system and the user's own access rights.

Affected Feature: Directory Listings

Older servedat versions produced pre-formatted directory listings, which movedat displayed as follows:

prompt# movedat DataExpedition.com: 10/16/2007 13:18 ../ 0 03/24/2005 11:07 Product Info and Downloads 234209 08/10/2007 14:43 DEI-MTP-Info.pdf 125764 08/01/2007 10:37 DEI-WP.pdf 11/30/2007 02:10 expedat/ 11/30/2007 02:10 hypergate/ 221513 06/06/2006 16:50 MTP-Dev-060606.pdf ...

Newer servedat versions deliver much more detailed structured records which provide clients with greater flexibility in processing and displaying the information.  New movedat clients display listings like this:

prompt# movedat DataExpedition.com: -rw-r--r-- 0 Mar 24 2005 11:07 Product Info and Downloads -rw-r--r-- 234,209 Aug 10 2007 14:43 DEI-MTP-Info.pdf -rw-r--r-- 125,764 Aug 01 2007 10:37 DEI-WP.pdf -rwxr-xr-x Nov 30 2007 02:10 expedat/ -rwxr-xr-x Nov 30 2007 02:10 hypergate/ -rw-r--r-- 221,513 Jun 06 2006 16:50 MTP-Dev-060606.pdf ...

If you are using movedat in an embedded environment and need to be able to parse directory output, you can access this new listing data directly:
