Identifying a Remote Application
In normal use, mtping will send an ACT_IDSTR MTP/IP request to the IP address and UDP/IP port number given. By default, this request message will be repeated once per second until a response is received or eight seconds have elapsed.
A successful result will indicate how many repeats were needed, the remote application id and version information, and the remote application configuration and license information:
prompt# mtping florida.mtpip.net 8082 ACT_IDSTR florida.mtpip.net (69.60.121.178:8082) Response 0 of 123 bytes after 0 repeats in 48ms (Version 2/0): lserve - 1.4.1 Oct 2011 - DEI MTP-linux-3.15.1 183 00000001: MTP-3.15.1 Data Expedition Inc. - DataExpedition.com, Internal
If the remote host is running, but the MTP/IP software is not running, you may see a result like this:
prompt# mtping DataExpedition.com 8082 ACT_IDSTR dataexpedition.com (70.164.67.132:8082) 1 70.164.67.132 1ms "Unreachable: No Application on that Port"
If the remote machine is turned off or not connected to the network, you may see this result:
prompt# mtping foo.DataExpedition.com 8082 ACT_IDSTR foo.dataexpedition.com (70.164.67.199:8082) ERROR after 1 repeats: Local Network: Host Down
Some networks and operating systems may not return an ICMP error code. The following result indicates that there was no response to the query, which could indicate a variety of problems. See "Tracing a UDP Route" for how to narrow down the problem:
prompt# mtping bar.DataExpedition.com 8082 ACT_IDSTR bar.DataExpedition.com (70.164.67.198:8082) ERROR after 8 repeats: Local Network: No Response
