Overview
ExpeDat™ is a suite of file transfer software which uses Multipurpose Transaction Protocol® technology (MTP™/IP) to send and receive files more quickly and reliably than traditional FTP applications. Refer to the Features chapter or the Product Website for an overview of features and benefits.
The ExpeDat application suite consists of a server and three client applications, which can be used to move files between IP networked computers:
| servedat | A high-volume, high-efficiency file server capable of integrating into a wide variety of host environment.
|
| MTPexpedat | A graphical file browser for Windows and Mac OS X. Features high-speed file uploads and downloads, built-in encryption and compression, and web-browser integration.
|
| DropDat | Creates pre-configured upload clients ("droplets") for Windows and Mac OS X, and custom configured MTPexpedat instances.
|
| movedat | A highly scriptable command line client for all supported platforms.
|
These applications function similarly to FTP clients, servers, and browsers. To use these applications, you must run servedat on one computer, and then use either movedat, MTPexpedat, or a DropDat droplet on another computer to transfer files. The QuickStart chapter shows how to get ExpeDat up and running in just three simple steps.
The Performance section describes how the underlying MTP/IP technology allows you to fully utilize your network path and how you can control that performance. For advanced information about scripting and embedding ExpeDat, see DEI Tech Note 0015.
As with all network software, you must ensure that any firewalls between your computers are configured to allow ExpeDat's traffic. By default, this means explicitly allowing UDP/IP port 8080 to pass through. See the Troubleshooting chapter for other firewall tips. The Quick Start chapter contains instructions for zero-configuration setup and use.
